Story behind the piece: "Shining Tempest" is a mokume-gane brooch shaped like a cloud, pierced by a bold thunderbolt with the sun just beginning to emerge from behind it. Forged in tribute to Phillip Baldwin of Shining Wave Metals, the piece honors his mastery of layered metal and the dynamic forces of nature he so often evoked. Like weather formed in the forge, Shining Tempest captures the tension between turbulence and brilliance, chaos and craft.
Artist Bio: Amy Hsieh creates sculptural jewelry that explores themes of constraint and personal history. After transitioning from a corporate career, she earned a Masters in Jewelry and Metal Arts at the Academy of Art University. She lives with her partner and four (and counting) rescue dogs in Seattle and soon to be Montreal.
