Sumo - Azukari Spoon, Knife and Fork
Artist: Erica Moody
Materials: Stainless steel
Dimensions: Approx. 7"
Fabric Motif: This is a sumo pattern. The Japanese characters spell out: Miyagino. That's a sumo stable that was closed down in March 2024 due to a violence scandal. Kinda ironic!
Haiku: a map is clear,
the journey not so…
rivers of tears

About the Work: "The fabric given to me for this exhibition is described as a Sumo pattern. Along with inspiration of the long tapered shapes printed on the cloth, I also wanted to depict something relating to the sport of Sumo wrestling. These utensils start as one piece, then as the handle moves away toward it’s end, the piece splits, swoops around and then comes together in a pinned lock, which would be a ‘hold’ or ‘draw’ called a Azukari (預り) in a Sumo match. No one wins over the other, which I interpret here as a peaceful 'match' and reunification of two back to one as it was started. The opposing curves of the handle relate to the opponents moving around the circle shaped ring. Forged stainless steel."
