Artist Statement:  

The whistle has long been a global symbol of resistance and a tried-and-true method of civil disobedience. In the United States as ICE enforcement surges, the whistle has become an alert system for our most vulnerable neighbors as well as a call to action for allies-a call to bring everyone into community. We are stronger together.

Artist Bio:

Nancy Bonnema is a Seattle based studio artist with a passion for storytelling. Using calligraphic marking combined with the traditional metal smithing techniques and a love for enameling is her passion. She loves taking classes to enhance her growth and jewelry skills. Her narrative storytelling gives her great joy.

This brooch is part of the exhibition On Point: Brooches that Speak for Themselves. This exhibition centers on the brooch as a compact but potent site of expression. Each piece holds presence—visually, conceptually, or materially.
