Artist Statement:  

I had fun making this whimsical brooch.  Flamboyant Beetle was inspired by trying some new enameling techniques.  The silver wing fabric was woven and then printed with stencils and sifted enamels.  The thorax enamel mosaic chips were made with knowledge shared by the late great Martha Banyas.

Artist Bio:

I delight in the magical surrealism of reality in nature.  My designs are informed by studies of entomology, and the life sciences.

As a fiber artist now working with metal; I find that after 30 plus years, I am still striving to turn straw into gold.  Translating fiber techniques into silver, gold and other metals continues to fascinate me. With a weaver's eye for color, I explore the processes of applying enamels in my work. 

This brooch is part of the exhibition On Point: Brooches that Speak for Themselves. This exhibition centers on the brooch as a compact but potent site of expression. Each piece holds presence—visually, conceptually, or materially.
