Origin of featured materials: Shining Wave Metals / Phillip Baldwin
Story behind the piece: I made this a challenge to develop an interesting pattern while also making a balanced form that was irregular in shape. I will be making a sugar bowl to pair with it.
I'd previously made a couple of rings with Mokume-gane and took this opportunity to challenge myself to do something larger. Developing the pattern as the work is formed adds a layer of complexity to the process. Determining when was the best time to carve into the material and how took some experimenting.
Artist Bio: I received an MFA from the University of Washington, where I focused on holloware. I make functional work in Sterling Silver as well as sculptural work in copper, steel and other metals. I've spent over 20 years in the architectural metalwork and custom residential construction field, and did a stint with the Chihuly studio as an installation artist in the early 2000s. I maintain a home studio to work on personal-scale functional and sculptural metalwork.
