Artist Statement:  

Heavy Hearted was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period marked by uncertainty, isolation, grief, and profound personal change. The work reflects the emotional weight of that time, while also considering the growth that can emerge through difficulty.

Artist Bio:

Curtis Hidemasa Nickerson Arima is a craft artist, educator, and academic leader whose work explores sustainability, cultural heritage, and personal narrative through inherited and found materials. He is Professor and Dean of Fine Arts at California College of the Arts and serves on the Board of the Community for Ethical Jewelry. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in the collections of the Metal Museum and Kamm Teapot Foundation.

This brooch is part of the exhibition On Point: Brooches that Speak for Themselves. This exhibition centers on the brooch as a compact but potent site of expression. Each piece holds presence—visually, conceptually, or materially.
