They are also believed to ward off evil spirits. Since I am immune compromised, I made the decision to give up my Thursday night monitor position at Danaca Design. I have not created jewelry since March, but I have made face coverings for my family & friends. I thought about the pine tree motif & the good fortune I have. Falling in love with the Roman face beads on the cover, Cynthia was inspired to make her own versions. During a visit to her native Hong Kong, Cynthia discovered polymer clay and fell in love with the medium. Cynthia is inspired by 18th Century Italian micro mosaics, as well as the elaborate works of Mexico's Huichol Indians, who embed seed beads in hot wax. Adapting these styles to polymer clay, Cynthia developed techniques that work for her and are 'simple and very low-tech'. Using this technique of mosaic in her work, Cynthia is able to create tremendous richness, texture and subtle color variation on a single piece. The motif is of pine trees and the jagged line is the symbol of mountains. In Japan, pine trees are revered as symbols of good fortune and longevity. They are also believed to ward off evil spirits. Since I am immune compromised, I made the decision to give up my Thursday night monitor position at Danaca Design. I have not created jewelry since March, but I have made face coverings for my family & friends. I thought about the pine tree motif & the good fortune I have. I decided to make a mask. I normally add earrings to my mask so this was no exception. I used my hand tools and sewing machine only. There is a hand embroidery detail reminiscent of the Japanese Sashiko mending technique. Also the pleating in the lining of the mask reminds me of Japanese origami. 100% of the artist proceeds will go to the UW Medicine Emergency Response Fund to COVID-19.

Artist Bio: Created by Seattle jewelry artist Nancy Hom. Sometimes playful, sometimes sentimental, I ultimately aim for my work to be comfortable, elegant and evocative of the more subtle pleasures of life. My work is designed for the wearer and constructed to be worn and loved over time. I have called Seattle my home since 1990, am actively involved in the Seattle Metals Guild, and am the founder and sole proprietor of Danaca Design Studio.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0258/8662/1799/products/TYJS-14aand14b-WDanaLg_SmHoops_9166a83c-b261-4ed0-a17f-42e8e901546b.jpg?v=1605573776
lily-of-the-valley-brooch
Lily of the Valley Brooch

This brooch can be purchased HERE.

Details

Materials: sterling silver, citrine

Finish: polished

Dimensions: 3 1/2" x 5"

The Yukata Jewelry Show

Artist Statement: I hike almost 3 times a week. The beautiful floral design on the piece of fabric I received reminded me of the avalanche of lilies found at the foothills of the mountains where I often hike.
