Yagasuri (arrow) motifs have a long tradition of representing protection from oni (demons), yūrei (ghosts) and, yōkai (evil spirits.) The lucky color red is also used in onamori amulets to ward off evil.\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eRelatively inexpensive cotton yukata fabric, which was originally used for clothing in the home, first appeared during the Edo period (1603 – 1868.) The collage utilizes images from woodblock prints and paintings of the Ukiyo-e genre of art that became popular in that era. There is a synergy between the cultural significance of the yukata fabric’s red yagasuri pattern and the often demon-filled art of the period.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eArtist Bio: \u003c\/strong\u003eVicki Scheele (b. 1946) is a self-taught collagist currently living in Southern California. Her work has been included in several publications including two by the Kolaj Institute: Transitional MOMENTS and Artists in the Archives, which included her work being exhibited at The Henry Sheldon Historical Museum in Middleton, Vermont.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA perspective on current and past experiences of cultural change is the starting point for much of Vicki’s work. Her approach to collage is non-institutional and somewhat idiosyncratic. Curiosity and a desire to understand the new, while still trying to reconcile it with the past, is a frequent theme in her work.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eShe uses traditional collage materials of books, magazines, photos, ephemera, found objects, new and vintage, as well as paint, ink and her own handwriting. Vicki’s work revels in the artistic freedom inherent in collage. The undulating blue ocean waves in the vintage piece of yukata fabric that informs this collage, follows this tradition. As in my companion piece, Arrows Against Evil, this work incorporates images from the Ukiyo-e genre of Japanese art.\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eAlthough Yukata were common in Edo period homes, it was not until public bath culture became popular in the Meiji period (1868-1912) that yukatas began to be worn publicly. Public bathhouses, which are highly regarded, brought yukatas into great popularity.\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eThe waves in this yukata pattern brought my thoughts to the endless waves of the ocean. The ocean may have provided the first baths in the long-march through history to public bath houses. This necklace was inspired by the design and rich colors of the fabric coupled with my childhood memories.\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eIn Japanese culture, the lily is seen as a representation of good fortune and happiness as well as a symbol of purity, renewal, and rebirth. It is often associated with the Buddhist teachings of enlightenment.\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eFor this necklace, the leaves and petals of the lily are individually hand forged from fine silver sheet. Joined in the center with precious metal clay, the silver is painted with several layers of china paints.\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eTo make the beads, I blow tubes of glass that are individually cut to the size I need. The ends of each bead are fire polished to bring them back to a smooth finish. She’s attended Pilchuck Glass School as a student and teaching assistant and graduated in 1991 from The Evergreen State College with a B.A. in Art. He then cuts, polishes, and sometimes carves his stones by hand. The mawashi is a strip of heavy fabric about 2 feet by 30 feet in size and folded in fourths lengthwise for most of its length. Walking through Seattle’s Japanese Garden and seeing the purple Irises in bloom which surrounds several ponds is breathtakingly. I have always wanted in some way to capture that essence in my jewelry pieces beyond just capturing it within my botanical paintings.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThroughout my childhood, daisies chains were not only special to me, but bring fond memories of sitting in the grass with my daughter and creating them with her. The title “Iris Garland” brings those memories back through childhood memories, Hawaiian greetings, peace, love, purity, passion and beauty. The addition of pearls brings a magical purity of the deep ocean passions to enrich the flowered garland.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMany layers of fabricating techniques were used in creating these pieces starting with long hours of designing, reworking and finally applying them to metal and paper. I enjoy cold connecting materials through riveting which is clearly evident in the piece. Each individual Iris blossom is hand painted with watercolors, colored pencils and inks on archival cold pressed paper then covered with archival polyester film which is riveted to a sawed copper Iris silhouette. The connective elements were formed, soldered, diamond tools were used to enlarge the beads and pearls holes and the pearls were also drilled to tube setting 1.75mm round faceted stones. Texturing and finishing techniques competed the fabricating process.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI thoroughly enjoy these shows that challenges us to create unusual art pieces which might otherwise be left as unfinished pieces on our workbenches or just a collection of sketches.
