Prerequisites: Basic metal working skills
Class Description:
Moving metal with a hammer—forging—lies at the very heart of jewelry and metalsmithing and is one of its great joys. A forged object can be uniquely lyrical and expressive. In this 3-day class we’ll explore small-scale studio forging with a focus on rings.
Materials Kit Includes:
- Copper and brass or bronze rod stock for forging
Students MAY Bring:
- Additional heavy gauge copper, brass, bronze, or sterling wire 4-8g
- Basic hand tools including flat and half-round ring file if you have
- Ear protection (we have earplugs)
- A hammer or two that seem good for forging if you have
- Vice grips if you have
- Clean silver scrap

Instructor Bio:
Andy Cooperman is a Seattle-based metalsmith, educator, writer, and longtime maker of jewelry and objects for exhibitions and private clients. With decades at the bench and work represented in publications such as Humor in Craft, Art Jewelry Today (I–III), and The Penland Book of Jewelry, his pieces are held in collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tacoma Art Museum. In the classroom, Andy is known for helping students build creative problem-solving skills—learning to move past “standard solutions,” experiment with process, and open new pathways in their work through curiosity, observation, and thoughtful making.
