Class Description:
Come join Megan Corwin in exploring the great textures and forms uniquely possible with the techniques of chasing and repoussé. In this beginning class, students start by learning to use the pitch bowl, chasing hammer and chasing tools to define and texture the front of a piece of sheet metal. Then create form and height by working the back of the sheet using repoussé punches.
We will focus on experimentation and developing your skill set by creating samples and a simple finished piece. Along with working on pitch, students will learn to make and use a die for forming the metal from non-toxic PVC called Faux Bone™. This material is easy to cut and saw and is very economical. The metal is hand hammered into the die. It’s a wonderful and inexpensive way to make multiple forms that can be chased afterwards.
Megan will bring tools for you to use during class and handmade chasing tools by Bill Dawson will be available for purchase in the studio. However, you will also make one or more chasing or texturing tools for your own personal collection.
Check out Megan's website to see some examples of chased and repoussé work. Discover new ways to express yourself in metal!
