I decided on something with a Danish Modern feel, for my mom's heritage, with a design element derived from a classic California swimming pool, a kidney pool, for my dad who designed and built pools in this style. In the case of this necklace, the kidney shaped elements overlap and decrease in size towards the back for a very comfortable fit. The closure is concealed to create a continuous line but is very easy to take on and off. These pieces are all bead-blasted for a satin finish, with a high polish edge and backside. An ivory cicada bead carved by her father is one of her most cherished possessions. However, it was a copy of Lois Sherr Dublin's \"The History of Beads\", which catapulted this fascination into a passion and career. Falling in love with the Roman face beads on the cover, Cynthia was inspired to make her own versions. During a visit to her native Hong Kong, Cynthia discovered polymer clay and fell in love with the medium. Cynthia is inspired by 18th Century Italian micro mosaics, as well as the elaborate works of Mexico's Huichol Indians, who embed seed beads in hot wax. Adapting these styles to polymer clay, Cynthia developed techniques that work for her and are 'simple and very low-tech'. Using this technique of mosaic in her work, Cynthia is able to create tremendous richness, texture and subtle color variation on a single piece. Each night at dusk a stream of seagulls fly west for the night, the “seagull highway”. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, even during those dark days. Seeing this got me thinking about all the animals doing their best to survive under increasingly challenging circumstances, many brought on by climate change. Climate change is a devastating fact. Collaboration is often an excellent opportunity to try something new and I love a good challenge. I chose my fabric mostly for the color, deep pink, a favorite color of mine. However, it is the butterfly pattern that captured my imagination and inspired the earrings you see here. When I sat down with the fabric, I saw immediately that the graceful, calligraphic and expressive lines would translate perfectly into forged wire. When I realized I could go one-step further by using mixed metals and oxidation to mimic the artwork in the fabric, well I got very excited. The first pair I made are bold (i.e. HUGE), like the butterfly on the fabric. They are perfect for the right person but not everyone, so I made another couple pair, one in the same style but smaller and one with hooks rather than hoops. As it turned out, working with the butterfly imagery provided me an unexpected sense of opening and hopefulness. I instantly pictured an elegant pair of earrings using only this shape, and cascading down as if flowing in a breeze. The subtle grid-like surface pattern on the silver hints at the crosshatching and grid of dots in the fabric pattern. For the Swinging Fans earrings, I combined the crosshatched cloud-like shape with two of the accent colors. I wanted to suggest with the gradient the slightly blurred look of the pops of color in the fabric. If something went wrong, I would simply have to start over. With such a large piece of silver and hours invested I would be fool not to take my time. So I did. Drilling, piercing with a saw, meticulous filing, these are tedious tasks requiring a great deal of focus. It wasn’t until I came to the finishing, often the greatest challenge of any project, that I understood what I had done.
