Class Description:
Learn the basics to fabricate a box clasp, hinges and other useful findings and their variations in this 4 night class designed for intermediate level students. You will make a range of samples as well as one finished piece. Students are welcome to bring projects to discus the mechanics needed. Learn to create functioning mechanisms to add to your jewelry or metal work while increasing your skills and fabrication precision. Explore what makes mechanisms function, the properties of different materials and adapting them to your unique work.

Instructor Bio:
Maru Almeida was born and raised in Mexico growing up surrounded by a rich silversmithing tradition and the work of local artisans. Her curiously of the artistic transformation of metal guided her to pursue both a BFA and an MFA in jewelry and metalsmithing from the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Oregon, respectively. Through her education she learned the necessary skills for working with precious materials as well as exploring non-traditional materials to incorporate on her one-of-a-kind work.
