Joan Hammond | Top Spot

Artist:  Joan Hammond

Materials: Sterling silver, sterling and copper mokume gane

Dimensions: 7/8 x 7/8 x 5/16 inch

Origin of featured materials: Shining Wave Metals / Phillip Baldwin

Story behind the piece:  These dots appeal to my love of pattern: geometric with just enough randomness to make them lighthearted.

Working with this mokume gane pattern was easy. I formed it using a dapping block and the hydraulic press, then patinated it before fitting it into the bezel.

Artist Bio: Joan Hammond began working in metal in 1994, when she started taking metalsmithing classes as an antidote to documenting computer software. What she discovered was a medium that not only utilized her previous training in painting, printmaking, and ceramics, but opened the possibilities of creating art that can be worn. Family artifacts and history, plants and animals, and the textiles and jewelry of non-Western cultures inspire her work, which she executes using various fabrication techniques.

This piece is part of, From Wave to Shining Wave: a Celebration of Phil Baldwin and Shining Wave Metals Baldwin.
