Artist Statement: Each season begs the question. This ring honors the delicate balance of conditions required for Monarch butterflies and the host plants they need to thrive. It features milkweed flowers, leaves, a seed pod, and gold granules representing monarch caterpillar eggs. The gemstones reflect the colors of my summer garden. The removable mobile hangs from the cast oak branch while the ring is worn. The piece is a physical embodiment of the balancing act required for a thriving pollinator population.

Artist Bio: Theresa Applegate is a metalsmith and educator based in New Albany, Indiana. Her work blends sculpture and function; always connected to natural surroundings. Theresa holds a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design, a MAT from the University of Louisville, and continued graduate studies with the Art of Education University. She enjoys traveling, scuba diving, raising butterflies, adventurous food, and spending time with her husband and two children.
