Yuko Tanaka | Cherry Bark Earrings
Artist: Yuko Tanaka
Materials: Mokume-gane (copper/silver), Sterling Silver, Montana Sapphire
Dimensions: 1"x1-1/2"x1/8"
Origin of featured materials: Shining Wave Metals / Phillip Baldwin
Story behind the piece: I was immediately drawn to this piece of mokume gane the moment I saw it during a visit to Philip's workshop. With only a small amount in hand, I knew there was no room for error. My design centers on showcasing the mokume gane pattern, enhanced with subtle texture, sculptural volume, and a touch of sparkle.
As it was my first time working with mokume-gane, I was quite nervous. Following advice from an experienced jeweler, I designed the piece to require only one soldering step and used easy solder. It was fascinating to watch the metal’s colors transform through heating and the final patina process.
Artist Bio: Yuko Tanaka creates jewelry with a focus on non-representational sculptural forms, embracing a minimalist aesthetic, bold contrasts, and asymmetrical balance. Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the refined sensibility of Japanese design, her work reflects a deep connection to place and culture. She finds fulfillment in the challenges of working with metal and values the meditative nature of hands-on craftsmanship.
