Virginia Causey | Crocus Serving Spoon
Artist: Virginia Causey
Materials: Sterling Silver and Phillip Baldwin’s Mokume-gane (Silver and Copper)
Dimensions: 5” x 1 1/2” x 1 1/2”
Origin of featured materials: Shining Wave Metals / Phillip Baldwin
Story behind the piece: Spring is my favorite season with the awaking of blooming flowers and the lushing vibrant colors of newly unfurled leaves. The crocus is the first to arrive even with snow on the ground. I have a love of jams and jellies in crystal containers and what a wonderful way to serve them with a crocus spoon.
Mokume-gane takes extra patience and focus when annealing, soldering, forming and finishing. What the layers so you don’t accidentally cause separation of the metal layers or sand away the pattern.
Artist Bio: Teaching has been my foremost focus for decades, but I find time to create and exhibit work locally, nationally, and internationally. I starts with detailed record-keeping in sketchbooks on how I view the natural world. Vague sketches develop into line drawings with hints of color. I continue to draw and write technical and mechanical outlines on how to create the pieces step by step. I am foremost a teacher, silversmith, and fabricating jeweler who uses non-ferrous metals and stones.
